Effective self-defense starts long before physical contact: noticing a problem early, creating distance, and leaving when a safe route opens. Personal Protection Solutions teaches self-defense training built on the same awareness and decision-making our agents use on executive and VIP protection details.
Sessions are part of our personal protection training programs and are available for individuals, families, and organizations across Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, and the other states we serve. Every class meets participants at their current level, without pressure or bravado.
What Our Self-Defense Training Covers
Situational awareness
Participants learn to read an environment the way a protection agent does: identifying exits, noticing changes in behavior, and judging how much space to keep from a potential threat in a parking garage, transit station, or crowded entrance.
Verbal boundaries and de-escalation
We practice setting clear boundaries, calling for help, and recognizing when leaving is safer than continuing an argument. Avoiding contact is often the safest outcome, so communication comes before physical technique.
Practical physical skills
When hands-on instruction is appropriate, we focus on simple movements that hold up under stress: balance, distance, breaking a grip, and getting away. Instructors adjust every drill for experience, mobility, and comfort.
Travel and daily routine safety
Business travelers, students, and people who work late shifts face different situations. We build scenarios around hotels, rideshares, airports, and the walk from an office to a car.
Self-Defense Training Formats
- Private sessions for individuals or executives who want discreet, one-on-one instruction
- Family sessions, with examples adapted for parents and older teenagers attending together
- Workplace group classes built around how employees enter and leave your facility, receive visitors, handle deliveries, and contact help
- Sector-specific sessions for medical facilities, retirement communities, schools, churches, and other settings where staff regularly interact with the public
Organizations that want a broader view of workplace risk can pair group training with an enterprise security risk assessment of their facilities and procedures.
Who Benefits from Self-Defense Training

Training is useful when circumstances change: a move to a new city, new work hours, more travel, or a role that brings public visibility. It also helps people who work alone, close a workplace after dark, or regularly interact with strangers.
Some participants come to us after an unsettling encounter. A class cannot change what happened, but it can offer a structured, respectful setting to review safety habits and practice responses. We discuss individual goals privately before the first session.
Why Train with Personal Protection Solutions
PPS was founded by Christopher Quirk, a U.S. Army veteran with 18 years of service and more than 500 executive protection details. Our instructors teach from real protective work, so the focus stays on awareness, judgment, and practical action rather than competition or choreography. You can meet the team behind PPS.
For clients who need more than training, the same team provides close protection services for high-net-worth individuals and their families. We schedule around your calendar and tailor each program to the people in the room.
Firearms Training and Guard Card Prep FAQs
No. Self-defense training at PPS does not assume any fitness level. Tell us about injuries, mobility limits, or health concerns before your first session, and the instructor will adjust drills and pacing so you can participate safely. Much of the curriculum, including awareness and de-escalation, involves very little physical exertion.
You will learn how to avoid danger, create distance, break contact, and get to safety. Sessions may include physical skills, but the goal is escaping safely rather than winning a fight. No class can promise an outcome in a real confrontation, so we focus on the decisions that most often keep people out of one.
Yes. Workplace classes are built around your facility’s entrances, closing routines, visitor procedures, and the situations your staff actually face. We work with HR leaders and facility managers on group size, scheduling, and location, and we can train at your site anywhere in our service area.
No. Self-defense training focuses on awareness, communication, movement, and escape, with no firearms involved. PPS offers firearms training and guard card preparation as a separate program for people with different goals. We explain the format and content before you book so you know exactly what to expect.
Regular review keeps skills accessible under stress. Many participants benefit from a refresher every few months, though the right interval depends on prior experience and how often you can practice safely on your own. Your instructor can recommend a schedule at the end of your first session.
